Check out our events this week as we showcase the diversity, knowledge and international connections on our campus.

From language cafes to workshops and study abroad opportunities, we have a variety of events that celebrate international education. Pick up an International Education Week passport, attend our events, and see how many stamps you can get. If your IEW passport has more than THREE stamps, you can enter a raffle to win a $50 campus bookstore gift card. The best part? Every additional stamp lets you enter your name in the raffle an extra time!

What’s in a Word?

The English language is complex – sometimes our words do not convey what we mean and can offend others. Join us for a workshop that explores how complex the English language can be, and how context is important in communicating with others. This discussion will look at some ways that some common words and phrases might be offensive and how to communicate more clearly.

Transforming Uncertainty into Career Opportunity

We never know who we will meet abroad, what opportunities will open to us, or how they may benefit us in the future. An international experience is the perfect opportunity to practice Planned Happenstance, the career development theory about creating opportunity through action on chance life events. Using this framework, this workshop will help you reflect on your skills, strengths and attitudes for considering an international experience.

The Career Value of an International Experience

Time: 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Location: Online

International experiences can positively influence your academic, personal and professional life. This online session connects you with McMaster alumni and HR professionals to discuss how international experiences are received by potential employers. Learn about the transferable skills our alumni attained through their experiences abroad and how these skills have contributed to career advancement and further opportunity in the workplace. You can log on to join anytime during the event window.

OPIRG Fair Trade Fest & Fair Trade Cafe

Meet fair trade vendors and local artisans. This holiday season, ensure that skilled artisans and labourers are paid a living wage by purchasing fair trade arts and products. You can also join OPIRG for their Fair Trade Café, exploring the spiritual, ecological, and geopolitical story of chocolate with Michael Sacco of Chocosol Traders (12:00 p.m. – 1:00 pm in MUSC 230).

WUSC Information Session

Did you know the MSU’s student refugee program is funded through a $1.53 student fee? This fee supports the sponsoring of a student refugee each academic year through the World University Service of Canada (WUSC), a Canadian non-profit organization that works with a network of post-secondary institutions, private-sector partners and volunteers to provide education, employment and empowerment opportunities that improve the lives of disadvantaged youth around the world. Attend this event to learn more about WUSC and how you can get involved.

Drop in at the Global Village, where AIESEC, in collaboration with several cultural clubs within the University will be showcasing the different cultures around the world.
